Air Cleaner Mods

After originally installing a stock, open-element air cleaner, I decided that an early 70's 'Vette dual snorkel unit would fit the theme a little better. Unfortunately, the dual snorkel unit was only recessed 1 1/2", as opposed to the 2" drop of the open element part. This caused hood clearance issues. I remedied this by using the open element center with the dual snorkel base outer to achieve the 2" drop needed to clear the stock hood. See the photos below -
I started by cutting the old air cleaner base around the periphery of the flat portion of the base, where the air filter element rests. A similar cut was made to the new base, but I left extra material around the new base in order to form an overlap between the parts. I then used a flanging tool and a sheet metal hole punch to help join the two parts. A series of spots welds, followed by some matte black paint, finished the base. This provided the additonal 1/2" drop I needed to fit the new dual snorkel air cleaner under the stock hood.
